GPS Visualizer is a free, easy-to-use online utility that creates maps and profiles from GPS data (tracks and waypoints, including GPX files), driving routes, street addresses, or simple coordinates. Use it to see where you've been, plan where you're going, or visualize geographic data (business locations, scientific observations, events, customers, real estate, geotagged photos, "GPS drawing," etc.).

Create KML overlays for Google Earth
NOTE: GPSVisualizer_overlays.kml (a GE "network link") gives you automatic access to this form's output from within Google Earth. [more info]
This page will help you create alternate overlays for use with Google Earth. It's true that Google Earth already contains high-resolution satellite data for many cities (and even some non-urban areas); but in parts of the U.S., the USGS black-and-white 1m aerial photos provide better detail, and the USGS topo maps contain information which is not available in GE in any form. For the rest of the world, the images from NASA's MODIS satellites might be of interest, if your data covers a large area; they transmit up-to-date (but low-resolution) images back to earth every day. -
This fine academic tool was designed to assist in the writing of reports, grant applications, and other documents related to public schools. I believe that it will be particularly useful for people involved in writing reports for WASC accreditation.

Google Sites allows you to create a custom website with your own content. You can set up a site for your class, your school, your library, or any other group that needs to share information and ideas. You can invite others to be editors and owners of the site so they can collaborate with you to build your website. The editor makes it possible to build a site in minutes, create templates for others to use, collaborate with others and create different pages such as announcements, dashboards, file cabinets, or lists. As the author, you have control over who has access to the site by sharing with everyone or only specific individuals. Google Sites also has the ability to embed media from many other Google services, including Picasa Web Albums, YouTube videos, and Google Docs. You can also insert images, tables, and other resources from outside of Google.tags: googleapps googlesites

OF all the challenges faced by college and high school students, few inspire as much angst, profanity, procrastination and caffeine consumption as the academic paper. The format — meant to force students to make a point, explain it, defend it, repeat it (whether in 20 pages or 5 paragraphs) — feels to many like an exercise in rigidity and boredom, like practicing piano scales in a minor key.

The BHS Student Help Desk is entering its second season and I wanted to share our course outline, pathways, and some of the opportunities we’ll be creating for Burlington high school faculty and staff. Our student help desk is available six out of the seven periods a day and consists of students who have interest in educational technology. The technology competencies vary for each class and set of students, so students have opportunities to pursue a variety of pathways in this course.

The Internet may well have its downsides, but it also has the potential to make us collectively smarter, according to open-science advocate Michael Nielsen. In Reinventing Discovery: The New Era of Networked Science, Nielsen argues that networked digital tools, such as discussion boards and online marketplaces, can make it easier for scientists to pool their data, share methodologies, and find far-flung collaborators.

Mobile Education Store | Helping Kids Connect the Dots
The apps you’ll find on this site were designed to help elementary age children build their language skills.
They are being used by educators to help kids who are struggling with syntax or narrative skills, healthcare professionals working with special needs children, teachers in ESL classrooms and parents of kids who just need a bit of extra help. All the apps engage the visual, audio and tactile senses, helping students learn faster and retain what they’ve learned.
While these apps were initially built to assist children with higher function autism, the ease of use, positive reinforcers and engaging graphics and animations make them a great tool for anyone working on building language fundamentals.tags: mobileapps mobilelearning ipads ipod

Lee Kolbert: Top 10 Reasons Why I'm Not Following You On Twitter And 10 Why I Am
For me and many educators, Twitter has often been like an online faculty lounge where I get control over who stays in the room and who has to leave. That may sound cruel but that's the way social networks work. You choose who to follow for many reasons. Everyone has their own criteria, and I thought I'd share a few of my own here.

Deepening our Learning Through Storytelling: creativity, STEM and stories - wesfryer
Description: These slides and videos were shared in the presentation, "Deepening our Learning Through Storytelling: creativity, STEM and stories" at Yarmouth High School (Maine) on September 28, 2011, by Wesley Fryer. As learners of all ages (teachers and students) we need to "play with media" and utilize media tools to communicate. Good stories start with good writing and an invitation to share. In this session we'll explore and discuss examples of digital media focusing specifically on science and math themes.

Open Educational Resources infoKit / What are Open Educational Resources
"There is no one, standard definition of Open Educational Resources. However, the following broad definition of OERs from OER Commons seems to be generally accepted by the community:
Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials that are freely available online for everyone to use, whether you are an instructor, student or self-learner. Examples of OER include: full courses, course modules, syllabi, lectures, homework assignments, quizzes, lab and classroom activities, pedagogical materials, games, simulations, and many more resources contained in digital media collections from around the world.
OERs exist within a wider 'Open' movement and context, explored below."tags: opensource opensourcelearning
