"Sophie is a multimedia authoring tool released under a creative commons license that holds a great deal of promise for digital storytelling in education. A free download is required to create and read Sophie projects. The idea of the book is the central concept. The creator can simply drag and drop components (text fields, comment fields, etc.) or resources (images, audio, video, etc.) onto a page. Objects and pages can all be resized. There is also a timeline feature that lets you start and stop audio or video as well as make any resource appear or disappear from the page. The comments component also merits special mention. While the book is downloaded to the readers machine, their comments can be read by anyone else who "opens" the book. It's a powerful concept combining an easy to use multimedia interface with the communicative properties of a blog."

They can work with a partner or they can work by themselves. If you work with a partner, be sure to share the responsibility. Once students have gathered sufficient information from at least 3 different resources, they will add their information to a Google Doc so that their peers can provide feedback. The purpose of the feedback is to help their peers perfect their information.

Martin Luther King Jr. Shaped by Conn. Town
CBS Assignment America did a nice piece on a student project about Martin Luther King. A teacher at Simsbury High School in Connecticut worked with students to investigate a mystery about whether Martin Luther King had worked in the Connecticut tobacco fields as a young man. What I like about this project is that the students were in charge. The research was real and relevant. Their findings were presented in a video. You can read about the project at CBS. My only complaint is that when I tried to get to the teacher's webpage, it was password protected. I couldn't look at any of this other material. Thanks CBS for sharing this great project!

Welcome to Yarmouth High School: 8 Years of Successful 1:1 Learning
We are an Apple Distinguished High School and often have visitors. Wes Fryer came to visit back in early December and tagged along on a tour with a group was from Sweden. They have just started their 1:1 project and came to see some of our classes. All of our tours are led by students. Wes filmed them speaking as well as a couple of classes. I am so grateful to Wes for recording these videos. I rarely get to really listen because I am distracted by all the other things going on when we have guests. Here are all the videos of the visit. I am so proud of our students and how they exemplify the process of learning. Thanks Wes!

Wes also interviewed Cathy Wolinsky and I about the importance of having tech integrators to work with teachers.
Wes is so great at documenting. Here's his blog post about the visit. He is really inspiring me to try to do a better job of keeping track of our work. When you're in it, it's hard to remember all the little things that make this project work. By sharing with others, it's given me a chance to step back and reflect on how wonderful this has been for our students and school. Thanks Wes!
