#hourofcode 2015

This year we decided to participate in the #hourofcode as an entire high school. We met as a whole school in the auditorium. As students entered, the robotics class did a demo to show some of the things they have been working on.

The event was kicked off by Dani McAvoy, who works for Code.org. She spoke to students about breaking the stereotype as well as her passion for coding and how it can help change the world.

"My problem solving did more than solve word problems on paper, it designed Apps, Games, and programmed Robots which helped people and changed the world around me."

Students then went to advisor groups and tried some of the sample programs. They could choose from this list of options.

Some of the favorites:
If students designed a game, they could submit it to a form. Those games are available here. Unfortunately, we didn't allow enough time for completion. I hope students will work on them later.

We also introduced "Game Amnesty" week. Students can play games from the list of submitted projects. Here are the guidelines:
From December 8 - 12 we will have “Game Amnesty” week.
    • Students must be in a study hall
    • Students should have completed their work for classes before playing.
    • Students may play the games from the “Hour of Code” list only
    • Students need to let their study hall teacher or the adult in charge (think library) know they will be participating
    • Consequences for not following the guidelines will result in loss of computer use for the study hall period and signing the book in the computer lab

We asked for feedback, including whether we should offer Computer Science as a class. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive to offer a course. Other feedback:
  • I thought they were fun! You had to problem solve and really think.
  • It was creative
  • I liked having to create your own adventures.
  • I like how there were different options to pick from.
  • From a teacher: It was amazing how engaged students were

I would definitely do a few things differently next year. I think the kick off needs to be separate from the actual time to code. I could have done a better job of building buzz and promoting Game Amnesty week. It's always a balance of how much information to give out ahead of time and how much to keep a surprise.

#Edcampgift 2015

Give the gift of Edcamp using the #edcampgift hashtag over the next 10 days!

This December, get in the giving spirit with Edcamp. The Edcamp Foundation knows that each and every Edcamper is generous with their leading, learning, and sharing. So, have some fun this holiday season giving to other Edcampers around the globe! Whatever you celebrate, please join in the fun! It's as simple as Tweeting or Instagramming with the #edcampgift hashtag! Each day, we'll be choosing one tweet. That tweeter will get to give a $100 donation from Remind to the Edcamp event of their choice! Find out what each day's tweet topic is by going to the #edcampgift poster

#Edcamp5Challenge

It's been 5 years since the first EdCamp. It's amazing how the idea has spread and how many people EdCamps have impacted. I know how much I have benefited by learning from so many interesting, smart people!
So now it's time to give back. The Edcamp Foundation is kicking off a campaign on #GivingTuesday, December 1st. The information below is shared from Hadley Ferguson on the Edcamp blog. I hope you will consider a gift.
We are kicking off a campaign for #GivingTuesday, which is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving! December, 1st! It follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday and is a time to pause and give back. We want to have everyone who has ever been to an Edcamp to donate $5, that’s all, to show the world how many educators have been touched by Edcamp.
$5 for Edcamp Year 5; #IsupportEdcamp5,  #Edcamp5Challenge
So mark the date: Dec.1, 2015, and make a donation! Of course, if you want to do it ahead of time or afterwards until the end of 2015, that’s fine too. And after you have made your donation, contact your Edcamp friends and encourage them to donate as well.
It is a quick and easy process. All it takes is going to the bottom of this page, and clicking on the Donate button. Remember that we are a non-profit, so any money donated to the Edcamp Foundation is fully tax-deductible.

Digital Discussion

Cross posted at the Yarmouth Student Showcase

All 9th graders participate in 4 sessions about Digital Citizenship before the first quarter ends. We want to help students understand how the core values fit into their online lives. We also want to expose students to appropriate online practices and help them make good choices about their digital lives.

Digital Discussion Website
  1. Kick off: Digital Compass Activity - Students view a scenario about a dilemma. They choose the answer that they think fits.
  2. Session 1: Digital Footprint - All students participate in this session in small groups of 10. They watch 2 videos, do a reading and then have a discussion. This is followed by a time for reflection.
  3. Session 2: Choice between MultitaskingPrivacy, and Digital Overload. They follow the same format as Session 1
  4. Session 3: Choice between MultitaskingPrivacyDigital OverloadDigital Activism, and Be a Creator. They follow the same format as Session 1
  5. Session 4: Students create a product based on one of the sessions they attended. Here's an example of a project.
